I had recently read an article that talks about how over 4000 lbs of sunscreen was off into the ocean. From there, the article listed the best types of sunscreen for you from EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. EWG’s Skin Deep lists just about every product you could own from shampoo, to conditioner, to toothpaste and then rates them to just how good they are, 10 being the worst. They base their points around toxicity, cancer causing, allergies, among others. So, I decided to go ahead and check how my products score.

First, let’s start with the face and lips. They don’t have my current lip balm listed, however they do have the old one. I currently use Smith’s Rosebud Salve, which the older one had a score of 1 so I’d assume the new would have a similar score. I don’t like carrying the tin around with me so I also use Burt’s Bees Nourishing Lip Balm with Mango Butter, which sadly gets 3. The kicker came for my mosturizer. I use L’oreal Men’s Expert Vita Lift Anti-Wrinkle & Firming Moisturizer with UVA/UVB Sunscreen SPF 15 which logs in at 7 with the worst area being Developmental & reproductive toxicity. My cleansor didn’t do so hot, either. I use Neutrogena Men’s Skin Clearing Face wash ranking in at 5.

Next, lets look at oral health. My toothpaste, Tom’s of Maine Natural Toothpaste in Spearmint, is awesome, scoring no points at all with it being all natural and organic. My mouthwash isn’t too bad, either. I use The Natural Dentist Healthy Gums Daily Mouthwash in Orange Zest which scores 2 points.

Hair is next. Neither my conditioner or shampoo did that well. I use Organix Shampoo/Conditioner Renewing Moroccan Oil with the shampoo having a score of 4 and the conditioner at 5, both having high scores in Allergies & immunotoxicity
and overall hazards. My body wash is Dr. Bronner’s 18 in 1 Hemp Soap in Citrus Orange and has a score of 1.

Lastly, is body products. I use Skin Quench Hemp Body Lotion which, sadly, has a score of 7. My deodarent is at 7 also, which I use Brut 24 Hour Protection Deodorant. None of my colognes are good. Each of them came in at 10 points.

Pretty much I need to rethink what body products I use. Clearly, I haven’t done so well.
